What Does an Architect Do?

Architects are a prevalent yet seemingly mystical group of professionals that have existed throughout history. The title "architect" fetches much prestige as many other fields choose to co-opt this title like Software Architects and even go as far as to say that particular individuals are architects of innovative systems in their field to show how much of a driving force they are. Funny enough, even with this use of the word "architect" to describe leaders for other fields, many are still confused about what actual architects do. They know it has something to do with buildings but that's usually about it. To put it simply: Architects, like in other fields, are the leaders and innovators in design when it comes to the built environment.
Architects set up the structure making sure it performs its function, works well, and looks good. They are not just designers that make things look nice. Architects mix function, building code, construction knowledge and artistry together for a holistic design. In the US, architects have to undergo massive amounts of training, and pass difficult exams just to call themselves, "Architect." It takes an average 13.3 years to get licensed so rest assured, many architects you encounter are well rounded in design, code, and construction detailing.
What does that mean for you?
Architects can help with ANYTHING that has to do with physical structures and design. Now this doesn't mean EVERY architect can help with EVERY aspect of design but it does mean there is an architect that specializes or is capable of designing what you need. Below are a few ways that I (Erika Culmer) as fellow architect can help you:

1) Building Design
Whether it's residential or commercial, I have experience in creating designs for these types of building structures. I can design a whole house or just focus on the kitchen, and I can design a building from scratch or take an existing store and remodel it into something else. These are all within my skill set and experience. With over a decade in this field and around 100 projects under my belt, rest assured that I can design something that fits your needs and style.
2) Permit Documents and Construction Documents
Depending on what you need done, obtaining a permit may be required. This usually requires permit drawings. On top of that, many jurisdictions (like all of Florida) require an architect on most project types. Construction documents take permit documents a step further and ensure that details and construction systems are fully designed and documented. What this does is ensure that contractors are all bidding the same elements and materials for your project and reduces potential change orders due to not having something documented. This is a service I provide and is usually the reason I am engaged for building design. I also respond to comments from the jurisdiction as part of my fees.

3) Color and Texture coordination
I love picking colors! As part of my studies, I did A LOT of watercolors and learned about coordinating colors and learning what looked and felt good. This is something that usually goes into building and interior design. With my full-service architecture package, I'm also happy to help you pick colors for your rooms. I usually provide a few options, as not everyone has the same style or taste. (As a matter of fact, right before writing this post, I just went through this exercise with my husband, who has seemingly opposite tastes than me and I was able to find colors that we both agree on).
4) Site Planning and Master Planning
It may surprise some, but architects also site plan for almost every project. This includes determining where a building should go and how it should be oriented based on existing boundaries and code requirements. An extension of this is Master Planning. Master Planning involves designing for the community or even city at large, taking into account many factors including present needs such as immediate housing lots and future needs such as a locating an area for future industrial activities that a community may be hoping to achieve later down the road. Another term for this is Urban Planning, which is something that my University focused on in our program so I am very familiar with. This can also be small scale like a park or even a backyard.
5) Design Manuals for Communities
If you're a developer creating a planned development, you may want a community to follow certain guidelines that are outside of the typical jurisdiction requirements. For instance, the style of architecture or the color palette may be something that you want controlled so that the community continues to have a particular look or feel. This is where a design manual comes in. Design manuals dictate specific community guidelines. As an architect, I can help ensure that the desired aesthetic remains, while allowing members to hire an architect of their own to design a home that's perfect to them. Alternatively, I can also create a set of cohesive house plans that property owner can choose from.

6) Owner's Representative
Sometimes, you need to know there is someone wholly in your corner. As an Owner's Rep, I can help you navigate discussions with contractors, consultants and even other architects. I can make sure that everyone is working towards what you want and need, and that everyone is acting appropriately. It can be hard to know if that's the case when architecture and construction language and processes aren't your specialty. Luckily, they are mine. As an Owner's Rep, I can even provide more ideas and help guide a project to where it needs to be. Whether it's in the beginning of a project before you engage an architecture firm, or during construction when you need to make sure everyone is performing their part well, I can help.
These are only some of the things that I can help you with as an architect. If you're interested in working with me for your project, check out my homepage to see if your project qualifies and book a Discovery Call. I would love to speak with you!
Your Fellow Architect,
Erika
P.S. If your project is not a traditional project but follows what has been outlined above, consider booking a Discovery Call anyways. We might still be the right fit for each other.
